Rose McGowen
Interview - TV Guide
TV GUIDE
Date: Unknown
Pouty silver-screen seductress Rose McGowan has carved a niche for herself
in the fashion pages of our nation's tabloids where her assets are frequently
on display in increasingly bizarre outfits and in countless uncanny
movies. Her roles in The Doom Generation and Scream showed us she's not afraid
to play hard, but we're betting you already knew that McGowan is no wallflower.
Her recent engagement to shock rocker Marilyn Manson has given her much exposure,
too, but her leading-lady turn in Jawbreaker is what's really going to knock
you out. Jump right into our gallery of sexy shots, and listen to this Manson-to-be
pontificate on the timeless allure of Twinkies.
TV guide:You play a pretty nasty customer in Jawbreaker. Why do another villain
role?
Rose McGowan:It's not challenging acting-wise, I wouldn't say, but it was
very fun. I just thought some of the one-liners were so funny and it was so
Warholian pop art to me. The bright colors and everything was so over-the-top.
It's delicious to play an over-the-top character. And next time out I hope
to do something completely different. I'm drawn to these younger characters
[that] seem to be the ones we know that have "the machine always turning
in the head" and where they can get something over on somebody, or at
least in this movie.
TV guide:What was it like to work with your boyfriend Marilyn Manson?
Rose McGowan:Well, he had to audition for it. I'm just kidding. He wanted
to do something in it. And, I went through the script and I thought that would
be the funniest thing. And the most fun for both of us to do. And he'd actually
asked. I'm actually really pretty fiercely protective of him and not letting
people take advantage of him. Or try to attempt to take advantage of him through
me or in their own way. So I was actually kind of against it. But he really
wanted to so it turned out really well.
TV guide:How do you feel about being in the public eye and, in particular,
how the tabloids cover you?
Rose McGowan:My favorite [tabloid article] was one that came out after the
MTV awards and it was a picture of me in a semi-clad state. That was of my
own design, I must admit. They had a picture of my boyfriend and I and they
called us "booty and the beast." Which I thought was very funny.
I mean, coming from those fashion reviewers at the Enquirer, I'm going to
take that as a compliment.
TV guide:What do you do to stay in such good shape?
Rose McGowan:I'm on the U.S. Junior Olympics volleyball team, actually. No,
I'm just kidding. I have to stop doing that. Actually I rode my bike up and
down the street the other day. And I told five people and [they said] "Yes,
that's very exciting." No, you don't understand. I went a whole two blocks.
And I was very winded. I don't recommend it. I have my little dogs, [I'm the]
the pied piper of dogs. They're all running after me. I can't do yoga. My
brain goes too fast, I get too bored and I don't like all that breathing stuff.
I always feel like I'm about to hyperventilate and I'd rather not do that
in a class. I used to live in Colorado and I've always lived in places that
are typical idyllic, nature places. And I love that just as much as the city.
So, actually yeah, I mean, I couldn't say my boyfriend does but I do. I go
away a lot just to go, kind of solo. I go away places alone a lot. Like New
Mexico the mountains there and things like that.
TV guide:Do you ever meet people from your commune upbringing?
Rose McGowan:No, the only other one that I've met is Phoenix, Rain Phoenix,
and I couldn't certainly say that [his family's] conservative. They were in
the Children of God in Venezuela. River Phoenix, his whole family grew up
in the Venezuelan chapter. We were just both out there, singing for money
on the streets. We had lived the same lifestyle but in different countries,
without knowing it. But it's funny that there's somebody else in the public
eye that's kind of from the same weird little background.
TV guide:Could you explain your fascination with Twinkies?
Rose McGowan:Those used to be my fee for babysitting. A packet of Twinkies
per hour. We didn't have a lot of money. And nobody would buy me candy because
my parents were full-on carob chip people. Which is disgusting. So I had to,
whenever I was out of the house, make the most of it. So those and Laughy
Taffy, [that] really weird fluorescent colored candy with really bad jokes
on the inside of the wrapper. I still get Now and Laters. Pretty much anything
that's really brightly colored and completely artificial I like.
